Richard Freeman Workshop
Explore Ashtanga yoga’s many facets through Richard’s metaphorical teaching style

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions, which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice taught by his principal teacher, K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. His background includes Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha Yoga in India, Sufism in Iran and, starting in 1974, an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga. He is still an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped Richard develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. He lives with his family in Boulder, Colorado where he is the director of the Yoga Workshop.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
S.1 Introduction to the Internal Methodology of Ashtanga Yoga
Friday, 14 September

In this class we will explore the basics of internal breathing, the energy connections in the core of the body and the subtle movements that compose the Ashtanga system. This class is open to raw beginners and to experienced students who want to get deep and back to basics. Ashtanga Yoga follows the sequential rhythms of the breath to produce internal alignment and energy conjunction. Just the beginning movements and techniques of the system can awaken core energy, which, in turn, gives deep meditation and insight.

S.2 Backbending and the Gravity Well
Saturday, 15 September

This will be an energetic exploration of the whole body's patterns found in back bending and then a precise re-visioning of the essentials of Finishing postures. With emphasis on the little details that make them feel really good, we will let them lead us into pranayama and bandha practice as a natural awakening of intelligence

S.3 Mulabandha in Breathing and Alignment
Saturday, 15 September

This class will be based on a study of the essential and elusive activity of Mulabandha and the strong grounding effect of correct ujjayi pranayama. The actual Mulabandha is a conjunction of complementary movement patterns that open the central axis of the body right up through the root of the palate. We will flow seamlessly through these movement patterns, following the thread of the central axis.

S.4 Balancing Postures - Core Strengths and Inner Calm
Sunday 16 September

Tapping into the central axis of the body through breath, bandhas and inner focus, we find strength and infinite possibilities of movement. In this class we'll explore the patterns and sequences of movement that cultivate the core strength needed for simple balancing postures and more complex arm balances as well

S.5 Inversions: The Palate and Pranayama
Sunday 16 September

In this class we will refine the Finishing Poses; inversions such as shoulderstand, headstand and variations, as well as sitting postures, by working the subtle movements of the shoulders, arms, neck, head, spine, tongue and palate. Like a perfect dessert after a fine meal, these gentle subtleties will aid in making pranayama and meditation natural. During the final segment of the class we will also work with the fundamentals of pranayama and practise simple pranayama techniques
