Sharath Rangaswamy
R. Sharath was born on September 29, 1971 in Mysore, South India to Saraswathi Rangaswamy, daughter of Ashtanga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Growing up in a house full of yogis, Sharath learned his first asanas at age 7 and experimented with postures from the primary and intermediate series until he turned 14. Although he spent the next three years focused on his scholastic education, earning a diploma in electronics, Sharath knew deep down that he would one day follow the Ashtanga path carved by his legendary grandfather.

Encouraged by his mother, Sharath embarked on this inevitable yoga journey at age 19. He would wake every day at 3:30 a.m. and drive to the Lakshmipuram shala to first practise and then assist Guruji, a routine he followed for many years. An example of sincere dedication and discipline, Sharath still rises early six days a week (now at 2:00 a.m.) to practise before the first students arrive at the new Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (AYRI) now located in Gokulam, where he serves as Assistant Director and continues to assist his grandfather.

Sharath is Pattabhi Jois's only student who has mastered all five series of the Ashtanga yoga system, and is currently studying several asanas in the sixth and final series. He resides in Mysore with his wife Shruthi and daughter Shraddha.

About Ashtanga Yoga
First cited by the sage Vamana Rishi in the ancient and asana-rich scripture, Yoga Korunta, the Ashtanga yoga system was passed to Sri T. Krishnamacharya from his guru, Rama Mohan Brahmachari in the early 1900s, and subsequently in 1927 to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Krishnamacharya's loyal student for many years. Since 1948, this now-legendary yogi has been teaching the disciplined style from his Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, located in Mysore, southern India, instructing thousands of people from around the globe. Today, he is assisted by his daughter Sarawswathi and grandson Sharath.

The Sanskrit word ashtanga literally means eight limbs, which, according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, correspond to eight distinct practices designed as a means to control the mind and purify the internal being: Yama (moral codes), Niyama (self-purification and study), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense control), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (contemplation).

Ashtanga focuses first on a daily asana practice to strengthen and make flexible the body and sense organs, the fundamental physical state for steadying the mind. Asana is assembled into six different series: Primary (Yoga Chikitsa) detoxifies and aligns the body; Intermediate (Nadi Shodhana) purifies the nervous system; Advanced A, B, C and D (Sthira Bhaga) integrate the strength and refinement of the practice. Each series should be cultivated proficiently before proceeding to the next, taught in correct sequence by an AYRI authorised teacher.

Pattabhi Jois stresses vinyasa, the breathing and movement system (each breath corresponds to each movement) intended for internal cleansing, creating heat and improving circulation; tristhana, three places of attention -- posture, breath and gazing (dristhi) -- which are to be performed in conjunction with each other; and the burning of poisons that surround the spiritual heart, achieved by a diligent and dedicated yoga practice over a long period of time.
