Transcending Backward Bends with Samrat Dasgupta
25 & 26 August, Langham Place

About the Workshop
For most of us, backbends elicit a passionate response. People either excel their practice with deeper and deeper ones or they skip them whenever possible, fearing the inevitable discomfort and challenge to overcome. Backbends open the heart chakra, build courage and stamina, and give us the energy that propels us to reach out toward challenges of the universe. How can we not value their essence?

If you are weak in backbends, it's not that you don't value the benefits - it's more likely that you have never truly experienced them. Maybe you are stiff along the front body or have weak back muscles, or perhaps you instinctively know to protect a vulnerable heart from openings you are not ready for. If you have yet to find joy in opening the front body, it's time to develop a different approach to your practice. Let's work it out together in this 5-hour workshop.

Students will obtain a foundation on how to surmount backbends while staying composed. Proper use of spine, shoulders and working through the hip sockets are the keys to delving into a great backbender! Detailed discussion about the anatomy and concepts will inspire practitioners to fulfil their ambitions valiantly.

About Samrat Dasgupta
Samrat was born and raised in the steel city Jamshedpur, located in Eastern India. As the only son in his family, he went to his first yoga class at 7 years old. The initial experience was distressing, but the consistent bagging of awards in competitions motivated him to make yoga a concrete part of his life.

Since then - under the intense training of his first teacher Mr Prabir Karmakar (Prof. Prabir) - Samrat has won numerous awards, including 12 years of Gold medals in State Competitions. He was crowned YOGA JYOTI (Flame of Yoga), YOGA SAUNDARYA (Elegance of Yoga), YOGA SHREE (Honour of Yoga) and YOGA KING. Samrat also won the "Champion of Champions" award in the All India Yoga Competition (Inter School and Club) in 1999.

A multitude of accolades under his belt later, Samrat began teaching in Hong Kong in June 2004 at age 21. But he was keen to keep up his studies, first in Yogic Philosophy under the guidance of his spiritual Guru Srinivas Suresh Kamal (Master Kamal) and later in Bihar Yoga Bharati, Munger where he was enlightened to the traditional Satyananda Yoga Style. The year 2009 saw Samrat obtaining his bachelor's degree in Yogic Studies from the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicines in Kolkata.

Samrat teaches with clarity, confidence, and compassion. In his classes, students will discover a supportive, challenging, and light-hearted environment where they are encouraged to explore their edge, discover their strength, and awaken their spirit. Samrat's teaching comes from a belief that yoga is a powerful vehicle to bring about transformation and positive change, not only in our own lives but also the lives of those we care about. He is honoured to be able to share the gift of yoga with others
