About the Workshop
Abhyasa and Vairagya - Consistent Practice and Detachment

Early in the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Sadhakas (practitioners) are cautioned to approach their practice with both Abhyasa and Vairagya - steadfast practice and non-attachment to results. These workshops will offer tangible ways to approach these lofty aims. We'll engage in challenging asana and guide our awareness towards the subtle, employing pranayama and philosophical elements to serve us. These Ashtanga-based workshops are open to all yoga practitioners from any background, preferably those who have some kind of established practice. We strongly recommend that you attend a whole day.

Schedule and Description
Saturday, 5 December: Vairagya - Detachment
Morning Session 10:00am - 1:00pm
Backbends, Bandha and Breath

Our study begins with one of the most challenging of all engaged philosophical pursuits - detachment from the results of one's actions. We'll touch upon this concept, and then explore pranayama and bandha as they relate to manicuring a self that is less attached. These same concepts will be put to the test in an expansive asana session dedicated to backbending. Not only will we practise, we'll strive for deeper knowledge of how backbends actually work, on the physical and energetic level. All of this knowledge should condition our backbends for safety and longevity.

Afternoon Session 2:30pm - 5:00pm
Detached Action Across Culture and Time

We will link Patanjali Yoga Sutra to other important philosophies and, most importantly, to our daily lives and Sadhanas. Detachment is a cornerstone of many evolved conceptions of being, including the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, Zen and Advaita. This field has always attracted Dylan's awareness and he will lead the lively discussion with levity. Participants will then seek to apply the techniques of detachment during the Pranayama session, which will introduce a complete Ashtanga Pranayama sequence. The afternoon will close with further letting-go during a guided relaxation.

Saturday, 12 December: Abhaysa - Committed Practice
Morning Session 10:00am - 1:00pm
Handstand, Arm Balance and Inversions

These challenging asanas usually take years of consistent practice before allowing for a comfortable balance to take hold. This practice is one that can be exhausting, sometimes frustrating, and yet incredibly rewarding. Calling upon Patanjali, we'll question our own internal process regarding consistently stepping into challenging arenas. Dedication and perseverance will also come into play as we sink into deep hip openers between the upside-down times. No matter the results, the various techniques that we'll explore will give us plenty to learn - and enjoy!

Afternoon Session 2:30pm - 5:00pm
Complete Pranayama Sequence, Closing and Q & A Session

Abhyasa need not apply only to asana. A set sequence of pranayama exercises was also taught by Shri K Pattabhi Jois. We'll practise the individual techniques as well as going through an entire led pranayama series on the exact breath count. Dylan will offer tips and perspectives on how to comfortably include a pranayama practice in your life. There will also be a concluding discussion on all topics covered in the 2 days of workshops. A sitting meditation will draw the day to a close.

Open to all levels.

#About Dylan Bernstein#Dylan had the good fortune to be introduced to Yoga and Zen meditation in 1988. Over the last 20 years, he has called upon the practice to engage the body, still the mind and study the soul. Lifelong interests in Asian philosophy, religion and poetry have inspired him to leave American soil and live all over Asia since 2001. During one year in India, he encountered Vijay Amar, who introduced him to Ashtanga Yoga and trained him to teach. Since then, he has been lucky enough to study under some of the world's senior Ashtanga teachers.

Dylan now spends most of his year travelling throughout Asia and Europe, and teaching Ashtanga with a focus on meditative and internal alignment. He is delighted to have the pleasure to work with Hong Kong's Ashtanga Sangha.
