Accommodations
At the land's highest point, an open entrance pavilion looks out over the grounds towards the sea. Ochre-coloured guest rooms are designed to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, with clusters of rooms erected on stilts in the lush valley, sloping down to the sea. All the rooms have balconies and are connected by corridors, which lead to ramps that allow guests to walk from their rooms to the main service building, including the health centre. Rooms are bright and airy, with high ceilings, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and en-suite toilets. There is no television or music in the bedroom. You can hear the sounds of soft chanting from scriptures in the morning and each evening as you pass the entrance pavilion, and there's soothing music at the health centre. You can also watch television, view videos or listen to music in the conference centre.

Participants can choose between
• Deluxe Rooms: around 400 square feet plus balcony
• Standard Rooms: around 300 square feet plus balcony

Food
In ayurvedic science, diet is considered an important complement to medicine. A special diet consistent with the doctor's diagnosis is one of the core therapies in ayurveda. As a result, ayurveda food is taken very seriously at Barberyn Ayurveda resorts. But this doesn't mean a strict regime of bland, tasteless or bitter vegetarian dishes prescribed by physicians. On the contrary, our kitchen is one of our greatest assets. The dishes our cooks prepare will surprise and delight you every day of your stay.

At breakfast, you'll find a buffet with fresh fruit, fruit juices, herbal soups, home-baked breads and cookies, and a selection of Sri Lankan breakfast dishes. For lunch, we offer a wide selection of mild fish, vegetable and herbal curries arranged in a beautiful buffet. In the evening, we serve you a set vegetarian menu with an option for fish. Each Saturday, we have our Sri Lankan night, with an extended buffet where chefs prepare typical local dishes in your presence.

Guests can select to have the vegetarian main course or the fish option.

In ayurveda, food and drinks are classified according to their taste - sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. That determines their influence on the doshas (body energies). The goal is to represent all tastes in every meal, but with specific combinations recommended for each individual guest.

At Barberyn Ayurveda resorts, you will find an ayurvedic doctor or dietician on hand during meal times to advise you on the suitability of specific vegetables, herbs and spices, and to help you select or avoid dishes according to your prescribed treatment. Your herbal elixir and the instructions from the doctors at the health centre will await you at your individual table.

This care and attention to diet is something unique to Barberyn Ayurveda resorts

The Yoga
We will greet each morning with a silent meditational walk along the beach, led by Wendy. After the meditation, you will begin an inspiring dynamic flow practice to open and strengthen your body. You will practise pranayama breathing techniques to focus your mind and to relieve tension throughout your body. In the afternoon, the practice will be a yin/yang restorative class, which will help bring the body back into balance.

In addition to the meditation, asana, and pranayama practices you will be journalling and group sharing throughout the week as a self-exploration tool, to help deepen your yoga practice. These practices, combined with the ayurvedic treatments you will receive, are a means to gaining optimal health. Both yoga and ayurveda have their origin in the Vedic tradition of India, and both are a marriage of better health.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is India's traditional, natural system of medicine, and has been practised for more than 5,000 years. Ayurveda provides an integrated approach to preventing and treating illness through lifestyle interventions and natural therapies. Ayurvedic theory states that all disease begins with an imbalance or stress in the individual's consciousness. Lifestyle interventions are a major ayurvedic preventive and therapeutic approach.

Ayurveda is more than a system of herbal medicine. It is a way to a healthy, long life, and can complement modern medicine. Ayurveda has two main aims: It treats the symptoms of a disease, and it helps individuals strengthen their immune system. Ayurveda treats the body, mind and spirit of a person as a whole entity, and works on the basis that the mind and body affect each other, and together can overcome disease.

Ayurveda Treatment
The yoga retreat includes daily ayurvedic treatment. An initial ayurveda consultation with a physician and subsequent consultations will be given to each participant. Once the individually recommended treatment plan is drawn up, you will receive ayurveda treatment as prescribed by the physician, which usually includes the following daily therapies:

• Freshly made herbal decoctions
• Herbal elixirs
• Head massage
• Face massage
• Synchronised oil massage
• Herbal bath or steam bath
• Any other therapies as prescribed by the physician according to medical requirements
