Shyam is a skilled yoga teacher who has been teaching since 2002. He comes from an orthodox Indian family in Chennai, Tamilnadu, a land of ancient heritage. He has been practising yoga since his childhood, his grandfather Mr.P.S.Viswanatha Iyer being his first teacher. Shyam has been certified as 'Yoga Acharya - Master of Yoga' by Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in India. He feels blessed by the grace and teachings of Swami Sivananda, and is grateful for having learned from teacher Swami Govindananda. Shyam has also studied with many experienced teachers both from India and the west, and hence understands both perspectives.
Shyam's teaching methodology includes physical control from both external and internal muscles through bandas and meditative mental focus on mindfulness of the body and breath. He is a stern believer in 'injury-free practice' using the intelligence of sensation. For him, "Being a yoga teacher is the best way to help people discover their inner happiness and peace."
Shyam teaches all levels of Hatha, Power, Hot, Yin, Yin Yang, Pranayama & Meditation classes, workshops and yoga retreats.

Shyam's Books
| Light on Yoga
B.K.S. Iyengar It is a famous, authentic and commonly used textbook for yoga practitioners worldwide. Lots of postures with good pictures, covering the basic and advanced postures with good explanation on techniques and effect.
| Yoga Mind and Body
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre Very good book for beginners. Clear explanation with photos of the sun salutation, and the series of basic postures of the internationally renowned and widely practised Sivananda style Hatha yoga. It also gives good tips on leading a healthy lifestyle on proper food with vegetarian recipes, proper breathing and relaxation techniques, positive thinking and meditation. Easy to read.
| Autobiography of a Yogi
Paramahansa Yogananda It is an amazing book written by an Enlightened Yogi who reached the highest state of Yoga 'Mahasamadhi' (a Yogi's final conscious exit from the body) on 7 March 1952. He explains with scientific clarity the subtle but scientific laws by which Yogis perform miracles and attain self-mastery. I love this book.

Shyam's Tips
| We all want to live a happy and peaceful life. Happiness begins with a smile, so remind yourself to enjoy your practice and keep smiling throughout the practice. Love your practice.
| Being very aware of your posture and breath and relaxing in the posture helps to reduce strain and injury and brings more focus. Practicing regularly during the early morning, proper food at appropriate times and going to bed early (not later than 10:30 pm) are some of the best habits for leading a healthy yogic life.
| If sitting or staying longer in the lotus pose is difficult, then take your practice off your mat. Try sitting in lotus or half lotus whenever you are in front of the TV, having dinner or while reading a book. For best results sit on a soft towel on the floor, if necessary use a small cushion under your seat.
