About the Workshop
The 5 elements (ether, earth, water, fire, air) are an intrinsic part of our lives and our nature. Each has specific characteristics and behaviours to which we can relate. Fire, for example, is related to passion and power, and as such has tremendous strength that can be beneficial and inspiring when it's properly harnessed - or damaging and harmful if uncontrolled.

Understanding the role each element plays in our bodies helps us connect deeper with our own selves and harmonise with the nature of our bodies. This understanding starts at the most palpable level, our physicality and the way we align our bodies.

In this 5-day workshop we will learn about the role each element plays in the physical alignment of our bodies, and how we can use this to harmonise and balance our bodies and ourselves.

Each day is dedicated to one element. Students can take as many days as they want but are encouraged to take all 5, as the alignment and postures will be progressing each day.

Format:
• 30-min talk about the element and its specific alignment role in our bodies
• 120-min practice


Schedule & Description
Day I: Ether, Space
29 October (Mon): 7:00pm - 9:30pm

The spaciousness of Ether helps us connect to the sense of space and relief within us. We will explore the appropriate foundation for each posture and experience the power of our own attitude towards our practice. Understand basic postures in a whole new way, build a strong foundation necessary to grow in our practice, and re-discover the sense of space within.

Day II: Earth
30 October (Tue): 7:00pm - 9:30pm

The mass and gravity of the Earth holds us stable. Our bodies have enough muscles, ligaments and tissue to support us. We will discover different ways of relating to our muscles and developing our strength - we will work mainly on standing and balancing postures, and how to re-connect to the strength, stability and support of our body and our own selves.

Day III: Water
31 October (Wed): 7:00pm - 9:30pm

The fluidity of water teaches us to be more accepting and to honour things as they are in our life. We will build our twists, open our hips, and grow our backbends to keep our lower back safe. We will learn to honour the natural alignment of our own spine and receive the gift of our practice.

Day IV: Fire
1 November (Thu): 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Fire represents the passion we have towards life, a strong and powerful sense of self. We will experience the power of our tailbone and use it to fly in our arm balances. We will learn to harness our own power to inspire ourselves and grow our own sense of confidence.

Day V: Air
2 November (Fri): 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Air is a subtle element with a strong power of expansion. In our bodies, it represents that internal growth that allows us to feel free and balanced. We will work on inversions and forward bends as we explore the importance of expansion as a complement to our strength and stability - that sense of freedom that we feel at the end of a posture when everything in our bodies is balanced… when everything is in harmony with our nature.

About Lina Zapata
Lina was born in Colombia, South America, and was first introduced to yoga while working in the U.S. in 2001. As an engineer and MBA graduate working in the high-intensity corporate world, being stressed was part of the job so she turned to yoga as an escape. Each class brought her peace, and helped her feel more centred and free. She was suddenly hit by the "magic" of yoga and she started to understand herself at a different level.

After 3 years of practising yoga and too many stressful corporate days, Lina decided to leave her job and become a yoga teacher. She wanted to be able to help people understand themselves at a deeper level. She first studied Hot Yoga and was later introduced to Anusara® Yoga. She fell in love with the heart-opening philosophy, sophisticated alignment, and community feel of this practice. Lina has had many revelatory moments since, one of the most impactful ones during a group practice when she realised that her body wasn't an obstacle, but rather a vessel to gain deeper insight into her Self. It was then that she finally understood the importance of being grounded in the alignment of her body and how that ignites a deeper spiritual experience.

Since understanding the role that physical alignment plays in yoga practice, Lina has been a committed student under teachers such as Martin Kirk, Ross Rayburn, Patrick Creelman and John Friend among others. She is an Anusara-inspired teacher and one of her favourite fields is therapeutics - "I know how empowering it is to experience the freedom that healing oneself brings."

Lina's message for students is to help them recognise that inspiration, healing and freedom comes from each one of them. Teachers can guide but it's the students who do their own understanding of themselves.
