Sujata

Sujata
Born in the lap of the Himalayas, Sujata started her yoga and meditation training at an early age in India. In her 20s, she moved to New York City and continued her Hatha yoga practice while obtaining her yoga teacher training certificate. Sujata has taught yoga in group and individual sessions for more than five years now and has specialised in working with children, pregnant women and those with special needs and health concerns. She continues to be grateful to her many teachers for deepening her practice. A mother of two wonderful boys aged five and four, Sujata looks forward to exploring exciting paths in teaching from her new home of Singapore.

Sujata's Books

Meditation in Action
Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche
A short, simple book that is direct and helps the student cut through trappings of the mind in a lovely way. I found it quite appealing, as are other books by the same author.

The Yoga Tradition
George Feuerstein
The author is a reservoir of knowledge on yoga and related topics. All of his books are well researched and offer the student of yoga many important pointers. This particular volume draws heavily from the ancient texts, shows how the tradition has evolved over the years and how the practice has developed under different masters. Good text for a serious student.

Moving into stillness
Erich Schifmann
This book explains basic asanas with clarity and modifications. Lots of photographs and a journey into the author's own experiences.

The five Tibetans
Christopher Kilham
The set of five exercises continue to be practised by Tibetan monks to maintain good health and vitality. The book mentions the almost magical powers of this easy-to-do routine and shows how to do them. It is a valuable text book - if you have any intention of following it!

Sujata's Tips

Don't hesitate to ask teachers about finer nuances that you might like to know about an asana or about your practice.

For a regular practice, try to set aside time and use a space that is clean and quiet. Start out with what you know well - then try out some new variations.

Whatever your physical or mental condition or fitness level, there is much that yoga can offer. Whatever you can do comfortably is the best for you. Simply try to maintain regularity in practice and results will follow.

Be mindful of your boundaries and be cautious when you practise. Ahimsa or non-violence begins with your own practice!

Don't despair and don't give up. No matter what.
