Introduction
These intensive workshops are the introduction to Swami Shivananda's teachings, and are based on the recently published book of the international Shivananda school, "Yoga, Your Home Practice Companion".

About Shivananda Yoga
Shivananda yoga is one of the main styles practised today. A holistic approach to yoga, they teach classical yoga and Vedanta philosophy as a way to promote physical, mental and spiritual health.

The five principles of the Shivananda School are Proper Asanas, Proper Pranayama, Proper Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation), Proper Diet, and Positive Thinking & Meditation. They are believed to enable one to lead a good and healthy life that eventually culminates in Nirvâna, the recognition of one's true nature.

The asana sequence of this style is comprised of 12 traditional postures and more than 100 variations. Yoga Nidra - or physical and mental relaxation - plays a greater role than in any other style, enabling one to get rid of his or her physical and mental tensions.

Schedule and Description
For students who want to deepen their physical practice, improve their health and open their heart through chanting, yoga nidra and meditation.

There will be two workshops: an all-level and an intermediate/advanced. The ability to do headstand is advisable for the intermediate/advanced workshop, since we will work on scorpion and other inverted poses.

Saturday and Sunday, 8 & 9 May
9:30am - 11:30am Asana practice and yoga nidra
11:30am - 1:00pm Lunch break
1:00pm - 3:30pm Sanskrit, philosophy, chanting and meditation

Saturday 8 May
All-level workshop

You will learn to chant several uplifting mantras with the necessary knowledge of Sanskrit that will help you to pronounce them properly and to penetrate their meaning. We will follow the 12 basic postures of the Shivananda sequence, focusing on the practice and techniques of some challenging asanas such as headstand and crow. You will learn esoteric techniques of yoga nidra and ageless techniques designed to open the heart to the life-transforming experience of meditation.

Sunday 9 May
Intermediate/advanced workshop

You will learn to chant several heart-moving mantras, the Devanagari script of the Sanskrit language, and pronunciation and writing rules of Sanskrit (part 1). We will follow the Shivananda sequence to explore intermediate and advanced variations of asanas such as handstand, scorpion, lateral split and locust, among others. This intense practice will deepen your ability to let go of physical and mental stress, and you will learn other heart-softening practices such as the exchange meditation (tonglen).


• Handouts will be given for the Sanskrit, chanting and meditation parts.

About the Teachers

About Karina Andreas
Karina is an experienced yoga teacher who has been teaching yoga to thousands of people around the world, including Spain, France, Argentina, Peru, Hong Kong, Taiwan and India. An active teacher of the international Shivananda school, she regularly teaches at Teacher Trainings and Advanced Teacher Trainings. She is also the official representative of the European branch of the school, appearing in innumerable publications including the internationally acclaimed book "Yoga: Your Home Practice Companion". She started her Sanskrit studies in 2004 at the Shivananda School in Spain with Swami Krishnananda and Swami Kaylasananda. Later she deepened her studies in Mysore, India.

About Steeve
Steeve is a dedicated practitioner and teacher of the Shivananda style. He has been practising this method daily for the last 10 years. He first received the precious teachings of yoga from André Van-Lysebeth, one of the foremost students of Shivananda himself. He later joined the Shivananda school founded by Swami Vishnu-Devananda, another great disciple of the Indian saint. He finished his bachelor's degree in Philosophy in 2005 and his master's degree in Oriental Studies, Indian Literature, in 2007 at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. He views the different practices as a channel to the divine in us, and as a way to live in a fit and attractive body.
