About Navakaraṇa Vinyāsa
Navakaraṇa Vinyāsa is a Sanskrit term that refers to the method in which the 9 units of movements (nava = nine/new + karaṇa = unit of movement) are harmoniously put into a composition (vinyāsa) to create a sequence (krama). Navakaraṇa Vinyāsa™ is a method developed by Dario Calvaruso over 20 years of study, practice and research based on the ancient practice of Karaṇas methodologically re-systematised for vinyāsa practice and teaching. Every sequence includes the nine essential categories (nava-karaṇa) of exercise: neutral (sama), posterior stretch (pṛṣṭha-dairghya), anterior stretch (agra-dairghya), side-stretch (pārśva-dairghya), twisted-stretch (parivṛtta-dairghya), inverted (viparīta), balancing on the limbs (aṅga-ādhāra), strengthening (tejaskara) and recovering (punarnavīkāra). Sequences are combined into a series according to each practitioner’s level and conditions, with a variation of more than 12 series.
Navakaraṇa emphasises the equal importance of Theory and Practice as well as of the continuing process of Practising and Teaching at the same time. Extracted from the Navakaraṇa Vinyāsa Mālā Teacher Training Programme, the Navakaraṇa Kraṃa Maṇḍala (lit. “A Cycle of Navakaraṇa Sequences”) is a Practical Intensive Programme for anyone who is strongly motivated and dedicated. Morning Intensive Group Practice is an important tool for improving the practice, deepening the experience and creating community. This 18-hr Intensive Programme can be accredited as practical TTP hours for those who have joined the Navakarṇa Teacher Training Programme.
About Navakaraṇa Kraṃa Maṇḍala
The intensive programme consists of 12 different series taught in a led-class format with options for every level from beginner to advanced. The Maṇḍala or Cycle of Navakaraṇa Sequences allows participants to practise a different series every day for the whole two-week programme. The varying of sequences helps to target different muscles, develops a wider range of skills, speeds up progress, optimises results and minimises injury. The morning practice closes with prāṇayāma and dhyāna.
