Uniquely Prepared: A Series to Advance Your Yoga Practice 
with Marysia Do

   

Part 1: 22 - 23 April (Inversions)

Part 2: 6 - 7 May (Arm Balance)

Part 3: 17 - 18 June (Advanced Backbends)

In this series, you will learn unique techniques to enhance coordination, build strength and increase flexibility for Arm Balancing, Inverting and Back Bending. What most yogis do not know is that, physical alignments in yoga postures are not universal. Everyone’s body is different and so are the methodologies for advancing your practice.  

During the series, you will benefit from a heightened awareness about your body and how you can move through and beyond obstacles. Greater strength and flexibility are hidden in the nuances, therefore unique actions are prescribed based on your body.

You will learn how you can enrich your yoga experience and transform your practice. You will also increase your stamina by learning to work smarter: with greater breath awareness and more purposeful alignment. 

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Precise anatomical alignment for your body
  • Purposeful movement
  • The interplay between the breath and the body
  • Mental stamina

         

Part One: Inversions

Students often ask what they can do to prepare for Handstand. Well, here is it! In this workshop, specific techniques will be taught to make handstand and other inversions accessible for all body types. It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. Here Marysia will show you how it’s done!

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Wrist prehab and rehab
  • Forearm strengthening exercises to stabilise the wrists
  • Core work
  • Shoulder opening and stabilising exercises 
  • Arm strengthening work
  • Hamstring and hip flexor stretches
  • Inner thigh strengtheners 
  • Inverted stability drills
  • Application of handstand to many basic yoga postures

      

Part Two: Arm Balance

In this workshop, a plethora of methods will be explored to increase your arm balancing capabilities. Marysia takes intermediate and advanced practitioners to a new level by increasing their self-awareness and introducing them new, unconventional and pragmatic techniques. With increased confidence, know-how, strength and flexibility, participants will arm balance like a badass.  

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Wrist prehab and rehab
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Posture safety
  • Hip openers
  • Twists
  • Counter postures for arm balances

         

Part Three: Advanced Backbends

Backbends can be the most liberating postures but without open shoulders, relaxed hip flexors and core stability, the depth of our back bending practice is limited. In this workshop, Marysia will show you how to open up the tighter areas, without exploiting lumber sensitivity. Participants will learn both traditional and creative techniques to open up and stabilise your spine as you venture into more advanced backbends.

  • Shoulder openers
  • Hip flexor stretches
  • Spinal articulation techniques
  • Advanced backbends
  • Core stability and its role in backbending safely

           

Schedule & Description

22 to 23 April - Part One: Inversions

Session 1:  Upper Body

22 April Saturday, 10am–12pm (2 hours)

During the class, you will practise drills and come to a better understanding of how handstand works in the upper body. You will become more aware of what you specifically need to do to become lighter and more stable in the inversion. You will practise and learn various techniques that you can take home with you to expand your home practice.

 

Session 2: Core

22 April Saturday, 1pm-3pm (2 hours)

Stability for inversions emanate from the core. You will flow while learning many practices that will enhance your strength and stamina.

 

Session 3: Lower Body

23 April Sunday, 10am-12pm (2 hours)

This Session focuses on your lower body and the role it plays in handstand. You will learn how to build flexibility to float up with greater ease. You will also learn how to engage you adductors to stabilise in the inversion. The core plays in a large roll in hip stabilisation and in class the core will be strengthened!  All the techniques gathered then come together in inversion drills followed by a simple flow. 

 

Session 4: Power Up

23 April Sunday, 1pm-3pm (2 hours)

We put together the techniques we have studied all weekend in an inversion centric flow class.

 

6 to 7 May - Part Two: Arm Balance

Session 1: Twisted

6 May Saturday, 10am–12pm (2 hours)

In this flowshop, you will learn various twisting postures to make you capable of flowing with greater ease into koundinyasa 1, twisted crow and even some modern, new twisting arm balances and arm balancing transitions.  

 

Session 2: Hips

6 May Saturday, 1pm-3pm (2 hours)

You will learn many hip opening techniques to be able to float though hip opening arm balances, such as koundinyasa 2, dragonfly and more.

 

Session 3: Tricky Transitions

7 May Sunday, 10am-12pm (2 hours)

Tricky Transitions bring a new level of liveliness and excitement to our practice as we bridge the gap between twists, hip openers and inversions. 

  

Session 4: Power Up

7 May Sunday, 1pm-3pm (2 hours)

We put together the techniques we have studied all weekend in an arm balance centric flow class.

     

17 to 18 June -- Part Three: Advanced Backbends

Session 1:  Upper Body

17 June Saturday, 10am–12pm (2 hours)

During the class, you will learn shoulder open exercises and their significance in postures such as wheel, king pigeon and others.

 

Session 2: Lower Body

17 June Saturday,1pm-3pm (2 hours)

We will study lower body leg strengthening and hip flexor stretching exercises to increase your back bending capabilities in postures, such as chin stand and transitions, such as tick tocks.

 

Session 3:  Spinal Articulation

18 June Sunday, 10am-12pm (2 hours)

In order to move the backbend from the more mobile part of our spine, i.e., the lower back, into the upper back, we need to be able to access core strength. Marysia will show you how to access that strength while moving further into your backbends. 

 

Session 4:  Power Up and Back

18 June Sunday, 1pm-3pm (2 hours)

We put together all the techniques we have studied all weekend in a back bend centric flow class.
