Workshops

Philosophy and Practices of Ashtanga Yoga with Marvin Cooper

Part I: 25 & 26 March

Part II: 8 & 9 April

This 2-part workshop series will provide an introduction into the philosophy and practices of Ashtanga yoga. The knowledge and information in these workshops is based on the teachings of Marvin’s guru Shri BNS Iyengar – one of the last living students of Shri T. Krishnamacharya, “the father of modern yoga” – and probably the last true living Ashtanga yoga master in the world.

Part 1

The philosophy of Ashtanga yoga – ashtau is the Sanskrit word for “eight” and anga meaning “limbs”, hence eight-limbs – comprises the structural framework for the true practice of yoga. This eight-limbed path was laid out in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali approximately 2,000 years ago, which describes the inner workings of the mind and provides a blueprint for stilling its restlessness so as to enjoy lasting inner peace.

Part 2

This part takes you deeper into the depths of the mind by introducing you to Ashtanga yoga’s inner limbs of pratyahara (controle of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (trance). You’ll also learn how the physical asana practice of Ashtanga vinyasa is related to the philosophical limbs of Ashtanga yoga.

Classes taught in English.
