About the Workshop 


Yoga Bou is a prop designed to help release muscular tension in the body. Utilising leverage, the BOU (stick or rod in Japanese) creates greater power on one side as you push another side away from its centre.

As it works on smaller masses of muscles and those in deeper layers, it draws out joint mobility naturally available in your body. By awakening the deeper muscles, the BOU will help realign your body axis, the basis of good posture, and release tension around shoulders and hip joints.  It is also an effective tool to teach correct alignment in Yoga poses.

The three-day intensive workshop aims at developing basic skills for yoga lovers and instructors of all styles focusing primarily on safely and effectively using Yoga Bou. Participants who complete all 5 workshops will be eligible to become certified Yoga Bou Instructors and can further their training to become Yoga Bou Master Trainers after 100 hours of YOGA BOU classes. Ideal for yoga instructors who teach hatha, therapeutic, senior, or vinyasa styles.


Open to all levels of practitioners.


Schedule & Description 


Session 1: 12 April (Friday): 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Evening Tune-Up to Release Tension from the Body and Invite Deeper Relaxation


Michiko, who is a co-designer of the stick, YOGA BOU, will introduce a special sequence to tune your body to release residual tension from your body.  This is both an invigorating and therapeutic practice. Asana Practice.


Session 2: 13 April (Saturday): 9:00am - 12:00pm

Introducing YOGA BOU FLOW 1  Warm-Up to Seated Poses


An introduction to a series of warm-up and seated poses from the original sequence YOGA BOU FLOW.  Our emphasis is on learning how to handle the stick safely and with awareness, so our body and mind respond with intelligence. Asana Practice.


Session 3: 13 April (Saturday): 1:00pm - 4:00pm

YOGA BOU for Shoulder Release. Targets: Shoulders, Scapulars.


Continuing from the morning session, we will take a better look at anatomy of the shoulders.  The work is therapeutic and informative, subtle yet revolutionary. It will also prepare you well to apply the stick to different body types. Pair work and lecture.


Session 4: 14 April (Sunday): 09:00am - 12:00pm

Introducing YOGA BOU FLOW 2 – Standing to Calming Poses


An introduction to a series of standing poses to calming poses from the original sequence YOGA BOU FLOW.  Integrating the intelligence and awareness of not making muscular effort, now our body responds gently to YOGA BOU and allows us to go deeper into the poses. Asana Practice.


Session 5: 14 April (Sunday): 1:00pm - 4:00pm

YOGA BOU for Core Strength, Targets: Pelvis, Groin and Axis of the body


Core plays an important role in standing straight.  Here, YOGA BOU can also be used as a self-adjustment prop that brings awareness to our core, aligns our pelvis, and controls range of movement in our groin.  Some self-adjustment techniques will be addressed and applied to balancing/standing poses. Pair work and Practice.


About Michiko Minegishi 


A Vinyasa flow instructor for over 13 years, Michiko is one of Japan's foremost yoga teachers.  Apart from offering regular classes at her home studio, Body & Mind Yoga (Yokohama, Japan), she travels to international conferences to share her physical theory based on her anatomical research.  Michiko believes that yoga is for everyone. With this motto, her life work has been to help children, adults, and seniors with physical disabilities. YOGA BOU (meaning Yoga Stick in Japanese) is created from her experience to help her students recover from brain infarction to regain mobility in the paralysed side of the body.

However, the idea of YOGA BOU was initially thought up to help a stroke survivor student regain the movement of her right hand.  After witnessing how the rehabilitative usage of the rod awakened her body functions, it became my passion to be creative in the use of this tool and help more seniors and children with disabilities.  Regardless of your age and physical conditions, simply placing it on your shoulders will relax trapezius and scapular levator muscles, open the chest and improve the posture.
