About the Workshop  

 

Join Jian Yuan in this half-practice and half-theory beginners' workshop that complements existing Hatha and Basic Yoga classes.

 

If you are looking tomaster the foundational yoga poses and learn some of the ways you can better integrate and internalise alignment cues into your practice, this workshop is highly recommended for you. Each workshop session will also have dedicated Q&A portions in which you can clarify any doubts or queriesto ensure that you take away sufficient knowledge and skillsets to further complement your yoga journey.

 

Schedule and Description 

 

Session 1: Saluting the Sun and Standing Firmly Rooted in Your Power

16 February (Saturday)

9:00 am to 12:00 pm

 

In each practice session, you will have time to incorporate the verbal alignment cues into your proprioceptive understanding of each pose as it sits in your body and distil what works for you and what does not. You will also have opportunities to ask about the poses within the framework of a workshop-style practice session. Come and understand how this allows you to integrate this knowledge into your body in a live practice environment.

 

You will also be working with your drishti (focal point of visual concentration) and breathing to discover an unparalleled practice experience where you are fully present in the moment. Through practice, you will become familiar and aware of how you are moving in time and space and how your concentration and mental landscape shapes your practice reality.

 

The following poses will be taught, explained, and broken down in detail:

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog)
  • Plank Pose
  • Surya Namaskar (with a focus on Ashtanga Namaskar (Knee-chest-chin), Bhujangasana (Cobra))
  • Chaturanga and Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog)
  • Common Foundational Standing Poses (including but not limited to Virabhadrasana 1 and 2, High Crescent Lunge, Utkatasana, etc)
  • Common Balancing Poses (e.g. Garudasana (Eagle Pose), Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana (Extended Head-to-Big-Toe Pose), Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose), Chapasana (Sugarcane Pose) etc).

 

Session 2: Cultivating a Flexible Body and Mind  Bends, Twists, Openers

17 February (Sunday)

9:00 am to 12:00 pm

 

This session will include an initial 20-minute warm-up practice covering the poses taught in the first session, before moving on to the main focus of Session 2 in which the following poses will be covered in detail:

  • Backbends: Salabhasana (Locust Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), Ustrasana (Camel Pose), Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel Pose)
  • Forward Bends: Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), Ardha Uttanasana (Half Forward Bend), Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide-Legged Forward Bend), Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend), Padangusthasana (Big Toe Pose), 
  • Side Bends: Parighasana (Gate Pose), Uttitha Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana (Revolved Head-to-Knee Pose)
  • Twists: Parivrtta Utkatasana (Revolved Chair Pose), Parivrtta Anjaneyasana (Revolved Crescent Lunge), Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose)
  • Hip-openers: Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose), Sleeping Pigeon, Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Mermaid Pose)

 

Both sessions will include an introduction, warm-up, practice session (with demonstrations, explanations, partner work), Q&A session, cool-down and savasana.  You may bring a notepad to take notes during the Q&A session.

Students working with injuries are welcome, as long as they are cleared by a medical professional for yoga practice. (Please discuss with Jian Yuan ahead of time)
