One Simple Thing – Ashtanga Yoga with Eddie Stern

About Eddie

Eddie Stern is a yoga teacher, author, and lecturer from New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga,

as well as his teaching expertise in Ashtanga Yoga. He recently released his first solo book, One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga,

which examines in clear and simple language the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga an effective practice.

He is also the creator of The Breathing App, which guides the user in a paced breathing exercise that balances the nervous system,

helping to improve sleep and reduce stress and anxiety.

About the Workshop

29 November (Friday)

Steadiness, Resilience and Transcendence

7:00pm – 9:00pm

Burn-out, anxiety, stress, and depression are some of the most common side-effects of the fast-paced, high-demand society that we live in today. We’ve all experienced them to some degree and they all have one thing in common: inflammation. Inflammation, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. It fights off viruses and is a regulator of certain bodily functions - but too much of it causes us to break down. It’s the leading cause of 95% off all preventable diseases, including cardiovascular disease and irritable bowel syndrome. In this lecture Eddie will discuss what stress is, how it leads to inflammation of both body and mind, and how change of perception can turn our negative stressors into positive challenges that we can grow from.

30 November (Saturday)

Ashtanga Yoga Practice with Eddie

8:00am – 10:00am

One Simple Thing: How Yoga Works

10:00am – 12:00pm & 1:30pm – 3:30pm

In this two-hour lecture, Eddie will discuss some of the underlying mechanisms of yoga that make it an effective practice for self-regulation, emotional regulation, and spiritual experience. Drawing from his book, One Simple Thing, he will discuss a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Even after thousands of years, yoga continues to be an infinitely interesting and exciting practice and philosophy, never growing old and always staying new. In this class, we will look at some of the reasons why this is so.

Meditation + Q&A

4:00pm – 5:00pm

Jocelyne will introduce four different meditations: the forgiveness practice, loving kindness practice, compassion practice, and space meditation. These are mindfulness-based practices to bring awareness to the heart, mind, body, and the space around them. Each session will last about 30 minutes with time afterwards for questions and answers. Jocelyne has been practising these meditation techniques for 15 years and is authorised by Kamala Masters to teach.

1 December (Sunday)

Ashtanga Yoga Practice with Eddie

8:00am – 10:00am

Stillness, Feeling, Acting and Thinking

10:00am – 12:00pm

In this lecture, Eddie will discuss the four paths of yoga that represent the four basic ways that we interact with the world. Yoga at its core is the practice of knowing who we are on a deep level. The access we have to that inner knowledge gets cloudy because our minds are filled with thoughts, desires, confusion, conflict and regrets. Yoga provides remedies for all of these mental difficulties, which are reflected through the four paths, or modes, of yoga. You’ll learn what the four paths are, how they apply to you, and what states of mind the four paths can help to soothe, so that you can use them to help strengthen your positive mental traits and gradually diminish negative mental states. This class will include chanting, pranayama, and lecture.

Three Bodies, Five Sheaths as taught in Taittiriya Upanishad

1:30pm – 3:30pm

In the ancient Hindu wisdom teachings of the Taittiriya Upanishad, our body, breath, mind, intellect, and source of joy are described as having five interconnected parts that envelop each other like clouds. These are called the five sheaths and they exist as part of the three-body model. The three bodies known as the physical, subtle, and causal bodies are still interlinked even though each is made of different constituents. The basic practices that were given by the yogis - postures, breathing, mantra, meditation, and service - address and purify each of the bodies and sheaths. In this class, we will discuss and examine each of these layers and learn how we can work with every level of our being in a focused and deliberate way.
