About the Workshop


We all have that moment in class when the teacher says "Now it's time for backbends". We moan, grin and bear it, as we power through to arrive at savasana. Fast-forward few minutes and we feel amazing, open and grateful for the backbends we just did.


Anatomically, backbends provide physical benefits that go beyond what the name suggests. Backbends invigorate the spinal muscles; power up your legs, arms and back muscles; tone and lengthen hip flexors, shoulders and chest. Beyond the physical aspects, backbends give us the space to breathe, to let go of what we don't need and let in what we do. However, the biggest barriers to achieving these benefits are the limitations in our bodies and minds. The result? Instead of “bending”, we feel like we are “breaking” our backs.


With this workshop, we will explore the proper alignment of the backbend - how each part individually and collectively contributes to a skilful backbend. In four interconnected sessions, we will come to understand and experience the humble backbend as a powerful example of the graceful mind and body connection of Yoga.


Schedule & Description

Sessions 1-3 will comprise of 30-minute lecture, followed by one-hour practice.

Session 4 will comprise a full Asana practice, closing with a restorative practice.


Session 1:

5 October (Sat): 10:30am – 12:00pm

Hip flexors and glutes – we will explore how to skilfully work with our glutes to open up hip flexors, setting the foundation for a solid backbend.


Session 2:

5 October (Sat): 1:30pm – 3:00pm

Shoulders and upper back – we will examine where we hold tension and how to let go, creating a spacious and graceful backbend.


Session 3:

6 October (Sun): 10:30am – 12:00pm

Trunk – we will investigate the difference between rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis, and how to properly engage these muscles to protect our spines. We will also consider the relationship of abdomen with diaphragm and how breathing would aid a safer backbend.


Session 4:

6 October (Sun): 1:30pm – 3:00pm

Mind – we will look into the different mindsets approaching backbends, at the same time, inviting a playful attitude as we navigate deeper backbend, including drop back and stand up from Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel).
