A Weekend of Anatomy Exploration, Asana Breakdown and Sequencing with Shiva Yoga Founder - Garth Hewitt
21-23 February, Asia Standard Tower – Central
Session 1: 21 February (Friday) 7:00pm-9:00pm
Shiva Power® Master Class
Setting intentions and practising gratitude, students move through a challenging and balanced flow with an emphasis on concentration and surrendering into the fire in order to achieve a state of balance, let go of attachment to the ego, quiet the mind, and work towards Self-realisation. This class will conclude with an extended final rest and seated meditation. Advanced variations will be taught for advanced students, and modifications will be offered for beginners.
Session 2: 22 February (Saturday) 10:00am-12:00pm
Want to deepen your knowledge of your body and understand what is happening to it in different yoga poses? What muscles are being stretched? What muscles are being strengthened? The word anatomy literally means “ to cut up”. The study of anatomy allows us to look at things more specifically and in isolation, so that we can better understand the bigger picture. Understanding the microcosm helps us to understand the macrocosm and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. This workshop will help students understand the different structures in their bodies, how these structures are connected and relate to each other and how each is used in a modern yoga class. Students will gain an overview of anatomy and anatomical terms, learn about common structures of the body, explore planes of movement, directions of movement, the spine, different types of joints, and look more closely at the musculoskeletal structure, muscular contraction, the anatomy of movement, applying anatomy to yoga, and common yoga-related injuries. Excellent for teachers and students who want to become teachers and anyone who wants to learn more about anatomy and alignment.
Session 3: 22 February (Saturday) 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Asana Breakdown 1
Learn how to deepen your practice and understand the alignment in your yoga poses! Some poses are about hip opening; others are about deep spinal twisting, creating stability and strengthening the core; some poses help to lengthen the spine and create a deeper backbend; and others help to release the muscles of the legs so that you can fold forward without injuring your lower back. Learn how to practise safely and properly in every asana and how to take your practice to a deeper level. Understanding alignment allows us to isolate specific movement at each joint, identify specific areas of the body that need to be strengthened or stretched, let go of old patterns of compensation, find more balance, and prevent future injuries. Use the knowledge you learn in this workshop to go deeper in every pose and in every class! This workshop is suitable for all levels. Excellent for teachers and students who want to become teachers and anyone who wants to learn more about asana breakdown and alignment.
Session 4: 23 February (Sunday): 10:00am-12:00pm
A well-sequenced yoga class will take students on a journey. All areas of the body will be explored. Muscles that need to stretch will be stretched and muscles that need to strengthen will be strengthened. Both sides of the autonomic nervous system will be stimulated, and students will be encouraged to find balance. Why are some yoga classes sequenced one way and other yoga classes sequenced another way? Is there a right or wrong way to sequence a class? What are the essential, archetype poses? Why are these poses so important? Why are some poses considered warm-up poses? Students will review anatomy, learn about archetypal poses and pose families, discuss sequencing and the purpose of sequencing in a yoga class, explore different ways to sequence a yoga class, and what informs the choices behind a teacher’s sequencing decisions. This workshop is suitable for all levels. Excellent for teachers and students who want to become teachers and anyone who wants to learn more about sequencing in a yoga class.
Session 5: 23 February (Sunday): 2:00pm-4:00pm
Asana Breakdown 2
This workshop will pick up where we left off on the first day. Students will apply their knowledge of anatomy and asana breakdown in exploring additional poses and working to break down more advanced poses and variations. We will discuss sequencing, different families of poses that share similar actions in the body, look at examples of patterns of compensation and specific imbalances in the body and how to undo these patterns and find more balance. Use the knowledge you learn in this workshop to go deeper in every pose and in every class! This workshop is suitable for all levels. Excellent for teachers and students who want to become teachers and anyone who wants to learn more about asana breakdown and alignment.
**This workshop will be a total of 10 hours count as Yoga Alliance CET hours.
