About the Workshop

This workshop is aimed at practitioners keen on deepening their understanding of fundamental yoga postures, making it relevant and accessible to both new and regular students.

 

Each session will address basic alignment for foundational poses and provide insights on how to get in and out of the posture safely, paving the way for a solid foundational practice. During the workshop, students will have the opportunity to ask questions /clarify doubts and fully understand each posture in a simple, yet precise manner. If you are looking to expand your understanding of these postures and take your practice forward, this workshop is for you! 

  

Schedule & Description

Session 1: Exploring the Foundation for Hips, Binds and Twists

Saturday, 28 September (9:00am - 12:30pm)

 

We will kick-start the workshop with a 60-min Hatha practice comprising sun salutations and key foundational poses. During this practice, students will warm up with sun salutations, followed by poses specific to the warrior series, hip openers, binds and twists. 

After the practice, we will revisit these poses in detail to understand proper alignment, safety considerations, and techniques of how one can get into them more accessibly. Elaboration on different body types and variations to suit everyone will also be emphasised. 

 

Focus Areas:

  • Sun Salutations (Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Ashtanga Namaskara, Anjaneyasana)
  • Foundational Standing Poses (Warrior Series, Lunges, Balancing, Twisting, Binding)

Even if you are already familiar with these poses, this workshop will benefit you as variations will be given to propel your practice forward. Those working with injuries are also welcome to join us after consulting with Jacqueline. 

 

Session 2: Mindful Practice of Back Bends & Conscious Awareness in the Breath

Sunday, 29 September (9:00am - 12:30pm)

 

We will commence this session with a 75-min Hatha practice comprising 60-min of asana poses and 15-min of pranayama / meditation. The Asana practice will focus on standing and floor poses, targeting spine strengthening and mobility, including backbends and forward bends. Emphasis will be placed on backbend safety and how to access them smoothly without any compression or strain in the body. Time will be dedicated to pranayama and breathing techniques to complement the entire practice,allowing students to achieve that optimal balance within their bodies.

 

After the practice, we will recap the poses in great detail, understanding the required muscles at play and the mobility and prep-work necessary to achieve these poses without over-exertion, especially in the lower back. We will discuss the issues faced by students and how we can make backbends fun, achievable and enjoyable. 

 

We will also focus on forward poses and understanding the proper techniques to enter forward bends and realigning the spine. Pranayama concepts and practice of correct breathing techniques will also be covered. It is important to note that a good pranayama practice will strongly complement your asana practice, allowing you to increase the capacity of your lungs and breath more freely.

  • Foundational Standing Poses for Back Bend (Natarajasana, Standing Back Bend)
  • Foundational Prone Poses for Bend Bend (Bhujangasana, Ustrasana, Dhanurasana)
  • Forward Bend (Standing forward bend, Ardha Hanumanasana, Paschimottanasana)
  • Pranayama (Kapalbhati, Nadi Shodhana, Bhramari)

Besides covering the above mentioned areas, this session will also help students understand the alignments and techniques applicable to all aspects of their practice.
