About the Workshops
Workshop 1: Hip Opening
Friday, 28 February (6:00pm to 9:00pm)
Students will review anatomy, learn about the muscles involved in hip opening, break down beginner, intermediate, and advanced poses, and explore sequencing and the purpose of hip opening in a yoga class.
Learn how to protect your lower back and knees by opening your hips -- and why having a full range of motion at the hip joint is essential for maintaining balance in the body and preventing future injuries. Explore what poses stretch and strengthen what areas, and identify imbalances in your body during the deep Yin practice that concludes this workshop.
*Suitable for all levels.
Workshop 2: Arm Balancing
Saturday, 29 February (9:00am to 1:00pm)
Students will review anatomy, learn about the muscles involved in arm balancing, break down beginner, intermediate, and advanced poses, and discuss sequencing and the purpose of arm balancing in a yoga class.
Arm balances are essentially standing warm-up poses that are done on the arms in either plank pose or low plank pose. Determine what is holding you back in your arm balance practice as we move through this workshop pose by pose, breaking down all of the most common arm balances you will find in a modern yoga class. A portion of this workshop will be spent deepening our understanding of the plank pose and the low plank pose and learning about the bad habits often practised in these two poses that may be contributing to future injuries. Is strength holding you back from achieving that arm balance pose you are working on? Or is it flexibility? Find out what you need to do to take your arm balance practice to the next level.
*Suitable for all levels. Advanced variations and transitions from inversions and downward dog will be taught for intermediate and advanced students, and there will be modifications and preparation poses for beginners.
Workshop 3: Handstands
Saturday, 29 February (2:00pm to 6:00pm)
Students will review anatomy, learn about the muscles involved in the handstand, and break down the pose. Students will learn about the “tug of war” actions in the body and how these actions are applied when practising handstands. We will look at different pose families and preparation poses for handstand, and students will learn how to deepen their practice of handstands by working similar actions in similar poses in the handstand family.
Several techniques will be taught to help students find balance in the middle of the room. There will be lots of exercises and tips to work on different areas of the body and students will learn what is holding them back in their own body or keeping them from deepening their handstand if they are already balancing in the middle of the room. There will be lots of time to practise.
*Suitable for all levels. Advanced variations will be taught for intermediate and advanced students, modifications and preparation poses for beginners. Some challenging and fun partner exercises will help each student learn to trust and gain confidence and courage.
Workshop 4: Backbending
Sunday, 1 March (9:00am to 1:00pm)
Students will review anatomy, learn about the muscles involved in backbending, break down beginner, intermediate, and advanced poses, and discuss sequencing and the purpose of backbending in a yoga class. Healthy and safe ways to explore deeper backbends will be discussed and then put into practice. Opening up areas of the body that are tight and stabilising areas of the body that are vulnerable are key to healthy backhanding.
Students will look at the different areas of the spine and explore the relationship between the core muscles and the muscles that move the spine into extension in backhanding poses. Maintaining a healthy spine is essential to living a long and healthy life. Backbends are good for the spine, stretch the hip flexors, the front of the body and the shoulders, take us into the fire, are energising and lift us up. For these reasons and more, they are an essential part of our yoga practice.
*Suitable for all levels. Advanced variations and poses will be taught for intermediate and advanced students with modifications and easier poses for beginners.
