About the Workshop

Arm balances are strikingly beautiful and at times leave you wondering how one can actually achieve them. They exemplify the qualities of strength and lightness as well as evoke a sense of freedom when you are on your hands engaging in an arm balance. Arm balances challenge your view of the things that pull you down and build muscle strength while creating lightness of body and mind. Plus, they are playful and spark joy!  

 

You are ready to dive into the world of arm balances, but you do not know where to start. You might be confused and overwhelmed by information out there on how to work on arm balances, often at times with conflicting information. Or you are just frustrated that despite your best efforts with the appropriate strength and techniques, there is still something missing in your arm balance practice.     

    

What you need is a clear understanding of the mechanics of arm balances, the right techniques for your body type, and for someone to guide you step by step to fly into arm balances. No matter where you are in your arm balance practice, there will be something in either one or both workshops for you to learn and practise. In these workshops, Derris will provide a detailed breakdown of the various types of arm balances (basic and beyond), the techniques for strength and flexibility required, and alignment cues that work for your body type.  

   

You may not master all of these poses in one day – but these workshops will speed up your learning curve so that you have the tools and the know-how to master arm balances over  time in your regular practice. You will work hard and have fun at the same time, and you will have plenty of opportunities to rest and breathe.  

  

Schedule & Description

Session 1: BASICS

30 January (Saturday) 9:00am to 12:00pm & 2:00pm to 4:00pm (5 Hours total)

 

In this session, you will learn:  

  • The various types of arm balances; in particular, the arm balances in the crow family
  • Techniques and alignment cues for the various arm balances
  • How your body type influences the alignment cues in arm balances and how to engage the various muscle groups in these arm balances

  

This workshop is suitable for beginners with at least 3 months of consistent Hatha 1 practice. Experience in arm balances is NOT a requirement. However, students with some arm balance experience may also benefit from this workshop in refining the alignment for better stability and safety.   

Students nursing wrist/forearm/elbow/shoulder injuries are advised to consult their doctor before proceeding.

  

Session 2: BEYOND

31 January (Sunday) 9:00am to 12:00pm & 2:00pm to 4:00pm (5 Hours total)

 

In this workshop, you will learn:  

  • The advanced arm balances and the transitions between arm balances
  • What an advanced arm balance means to you in terms of your body type
  • Techniques and alignment cues for these advanced arm balances and transitions as well as holding the arm balances with ease and lightness
  • Drills for strength and flexibility required in these poses

  

This workshop is NOT for beginners. Experience in arm balances with at least 6 months of consistent Hatha 1 practice is required.

Students nursing wrist/forearm/elbow/shoulder injuries are advised to consult their doctor before proceeding.
