Embracing Backbends with Janet Voo

About the Workshop

In this 5-hour programme, you will explore an effective way to strengthen the back and lengthen the spine under the guidance of Janet, who will assist you to overcome your limitations and unlock your greater potential. We will gradually and safely work towards deeper back bend asanas and at the end of the sessions, students will gain more confidence in their ability to attempt new and advanced back bends.  


Key focus:  

- Deepen your knowledge in spine mechanics  

- Learn techniques to perform back bends safely and take your practice to the next level  

- Learn different variations of back bends  

- Release tension and pain in the lower back, working towards a healthier spine  


This programme is open to all – some experience of back bend practice recommended.


Schedule & Description

Session 1: Heart Opening and Flip Grip   

20 February (Saturday): 10:00am to 12:30pm   


The goal here is to use various ways to open up your upper and mid-back. You will also learn drills and exercises to create greater mobility in your shoulders that allow you to access an overhead flipped grip position. We will explore some advanced back bend poses such as chin stand towards the end of the session.  


Session 2: Hip Flexor and Back Strengthening

21 February (Sunday): 10:00am to 12:30pm   


We will work on opening the lower front part of the body: psoas, hip flexors, quad and more. Back bend is not just about the front opening. This session also offers effective back strengthening drills to tone the entire back core. We will attempt advanced back bend poses such as drop back, forearm wheel and scorpion towards the end of the session.
