About the Workshop
The use of the chair in yoga was developed by Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar as a tool to deepen and improve yoga asana practice and has gained population in recent years due to the positive experience and impact it offers.
Yoga practitioners of different levels and styles find that the yoga chair helps to bring more opening and awareness to the body.
It enables a higher capacity to learn and practise challenging poses and be able to stay longer in poses for the full benefits.
The chair is also an excellent tool to enhance our daily mat yoga practice, allowing us to deepen our studies in a fun and lighthearted way.
Schedule & Description
Session 1: Chair Basics & Refined Foundation
9 April 2022 (Saturday), 10am – 12pm
Cora will give an introduction and instruction on how to use the yoga chair.
Students will learn how to safely perform foundation poses on the yoga chair and refine alignment.
The chair will also be used for seated meditation, sun salutation, and therapeutic positions. Some Level 2 poses and arm balance preparation will be introduced.
Session 2: Inversions and Hip Opening
9 April 2022 (Saturday), 1pm – 3pm
We will focus on using the chair to safely perform inversions such as headstand (Sirsasana) and forearm balances (Pincha Mayurasana).
As a cool-down, we will also learn how to use the chair for restorative practices with longer-held poses that loosen up tightness in our legs and hips.
Session 3: Twists and Backbends
10 April 2022 (Sunday), 10am – 12pm
We will review the previous day’s learning and progress to using the chair for spinal work starting from twists and moving into deeper backbends including wheel pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), Viparita Dandasana and variations.
Session 4: Advanced Asanas and Restorative Inversion
10 April 2022 (Sunday), 1pm – 3pm
We will use the chair to practise more advanced asanas like tick-tocks, scorpions, and deeper backbends including Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (King Pigeon) and Natarajasana (King Dancer).
As a cool-down, we will use the chair to practise Shoulderstand (Savangasana), Plow pose (Halasana) and a long sweet Savasana to finish.
All students will complete the workshop knowing how to safely incorporate the chair into their daily practice – from active asanas into deep stretches and relaxation.
