15-hour Chair Yoga CET

About the Programme

This programme provides insight into how to incorporate the yoga chair into your personal practice or teachings. You will learn several sequences that create a safe environment to deepen and improve your and your students’ yoga asana practice. 

Yoga practitioners of different levels and practices find that the yoga chair helps to bring more opening and awareness to the body. It enables a higher capacity to learn and practise challenging poses and be able to stay longer in poses for the full benefits. The chair is also an excellent tool to enhance our daily mat yoga practice, allowing us to deepen our studies in an interactive and lighthearted way.  

All students will complete the workshop feeling equipped to know how to safely use the chair to incorporate into their daily practice, from active asanas to deep stretches and relaxations.  

We will approach the practice with techniques, study, demonstrations and refinement targets. It is a fun, investigative and interactive process filled with discussions and demonstrations.   

Suitable for seasoned practitioners and yoga teachers.

  

Schedule & Description

  

Session 1: Chair Basics and Refined foundation  

31 March (Friday), 9:30am to 12:00pm

 

During the first session, Cora will give an introduction and instruction on how to use the yoga chair and learn how to safely perform foundation poses on the yoga chair and refine alignment in poses. We will also learn to incorporate the use of a chair in a more dynamic vinyasa practice.  

 

This section will include sun salutations, standing poses, adapted poses using the chair and balancing poses. Some arm balances and inversion preparations will be introduced.  

 

Session 2: Twists & Hip Opening

31 March (Friday), 1:00pm to 3:30pm

  

This session will focus on using the chair to strengthen and open the two major joints of the body - hips and shoulders.

We will learn how to use the chair to facilitate twisting postures, followed by hip and leg strengthening. We will finish with learning how to use the chair for practices with longer-held poses that relieve tightness in our legs and hips.

 

Session 3: Arm Balances & Inversions

1 April (Saturday), 9:30am to 12:00pm

 

In this session, we will review fundamental poses from the previous day and explore using the chair for arm balancing, emphasising intelligent preparations, proper alignment and skilful techniques using the chair.  

 

In the second half of this section, we will focus on how to use the chair to safely perform inversions such as headstands (Sirsasana) and forearm balances (Pincha Mayurasana). As a cool down, we will use the chair to practice the shoulder stand (Savangasana) and plow pose (Halasana) and an extended Savasana to finish.  

 

Session 4: Backends

1 April (Saturday), 1:00pm to 3:30pm

 

In this session, we will learn the use of the chair in backbends. We will learn the fundamentals of back bending, preparations using the chair, and how to facilitate poses that are often challenging in a mat practice with the use of the chair.  

Poses include wheel pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana) and Viparita Dandasana and variations.  

 

Session 5: Advanced Asanas

2 April (Sunday), 9:30am to 12:00pm

 

In this session, we will combine what we learned from the last two days and incorporate the use of the chair to practice more advanced asanas.  

Arm balances with inversions. Twists with backbends. Inversions into backbends. Some deeper backbends include scorpions, dropbacks and deeper backbends, including Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (King Pigeon) and Natarajasana (King Dancer).

 

Session 6: Chair for Adaptation & Restorative

2 April (Sunday), 1:00pm to 3:30pm

 

During the final session, we will learn how to use the chair to adapt to different bodies, including circumstances related to injuries and physical limitations. We will also end the workshop with a restorative practice.
