About David Swenson

David Swenson began practising yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. His older brother Doug was his first teacher. They practised hatha yoga from whatever books they could find. David's introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1975 David and Nancy brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. Swenson made his first trip to Mysore in 1977. He is one of a very small number of people that have learned the full Ashtanga system as originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. David Swenson is recognised today as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. David has produced 5 DVD’s and is the author of the highly popular and bestselling yoga book: Ashtanga Yoga “The Practice Manual” that has been printed in 10 different languages and sold internationally.

40-Hour Teacher Training Immersion

This course will cover the teaching techniques of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. You will learn safe and effective hands-on adjustments through partner work for all asanas, the practicalities of conducting a class, and yoga theory. This immersion delves into the details underlying the practice and teaching of Ashtanga. Participants should have a consistent personal practice of Ashtanga Yoga and understand the flow and sequencing of the asanas of the full first series.

The course is not designed as an avenue to learn the sequence but rather to learn to teach Ashtanga Yoga or to deepen an existing practice. As with all courses run by David Swenson, there is always plenty of laughter and fun woven into the experience. You are sure to learn more than you ever imagined possible in a week-long course and have a great time in the process. Don’t miss this opportunity!

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion upon course completion.

Session 1: MMMmmmysore Class

7:00pm to 9:00pm

The tastiest way to practise for personal growth and enhanced understanding.

Led classes are wonderful. We can unplug and wait for the teacher to tell us what to do next. This is soothing, nurturing and fulfilling. This approach, however, is like a chaperoned relationship with yoga. The teacher is always looking over our shoulder to remind us of every breath and movement. This is a blessed way to practise and is certainly valid! But within this approach we can run the risk of becoming dependent on the teacher’s guidance to the point that we do not have a sense of our own rhythm, timing and breath.

In order to truly develop a deep and personal relationship with the yoga, we need to wean ourselves away from the teacher’s words and seek the voice of Ashtanga as it arises through the sound of our own breath and the dancing flow of the sequence. The teacher is still present, yet only to assist where absolutely necessary – to guide when needed and advise when required. Now the depths of practice spread her arms and welcome us into the flow. This relationship once established is freedom! Now we stand on our own and walk hand in hand with the practice and the ancient wisdom gained from the direct connection. The greatest teachers instil strength, independence and confidence into their students. Mysore practice is a stepping stone to the path of self-reliance.

21 Sept (Saturday)

Session 2: A Day in the Life of the Primary Series

9:00 -11:00am, 12:30 - 3:00pm, 3:30-5:30pm

Flow – Compassionately Led Primary

The day begins with David and Shelley taking students through the traditional flow of the Primary Series. As always, there will be alternatives offered and compassionate attention provided so that all levels will feel comfortable to participate within their particular levels.

Practicum – Asanas, Alternatives and Attitude

The asanas, sequence and inherent energetic expression of the Primary series will be explored through discussion and applications within a short flow. If there are specific requests for details about certain asanas, conditions and alternatives, David and Shelley will share insights and practical advice for practising of the Primary Series to manifest its inherent purpose as a therapeutic and healing experience.

Discussion – Fear, Focus, Forgiveness and Fulfilment

Open discussion, stories told, and Q&A with David and Shelley in regards to treading the path of practice whilst confronting the pitfalls, pratfalls and fearful encounters of the yogic journey.

22 Sept (Sunday)

Session 3: Intermediate Series and the Creatures Within!

9:00 -11:00am, 12:30 - 3:00pm, 3:30-5:30pm

Flow – Compassionately Led Intermediate

The day begins with David and Shelley taking students through a compassionate and measured flow of the Intermediate Series. There are many practitioners that feel a bit intimidated by the second series. It is truly an elegant, beautiful and graceful arrangement of asanas that is much more accessible than one might think. David and Shelley are incredibly intuitive, sensitive and experienced in presenting the practice with care, clarity and joy! EVERY asana may be modified, amplified or demystified to suit the needs of every individual. Come and see for yourself!

Practicum – Entering the Jungle and Animal Encounters

There is a wonderful ‘zoological’ component within the Intermediate Series as the animals come out to play in this dynamic and invigorating sequence. In this second session of the day, David and Shelley will present ways to approach these animals with care, wonder and joy! They will address any specific areas of interest expressed by the participants as well as providing wisdom gained from personal encounters with the wondrous creatures and the cleansing effects on the nervous system, mind and emotional releases from the power of practice.

Discussion – Advantages of Age and the Myth of Eternal Youth

Once again there will be open discussion, stories told, and Q&A with David and Shelley focusing on the inevitable reality of ageing and the struggles of acceptance, uncertainty of the unknown, and the peace found from embracing the journey.
