About the Workshop

The ancient healing art of Thai Massage has many similarities to Yoga, from mindful breathing to deep stretching and creating energetic harmony. Often called ‘lazy man’s Yoga’, an effective Thai Massage results in benefits for both the practitioner and the recipient in the form of increased joint mobility, flexibility and a more balanced nervous system. Part of the system of Buddhist medicine and always delivered with the intention of ‘Metta’ or loving kindness, Thai Massage is an excellent way to deepen relationships with your partner or Yoga students and learn to both give and receive compassion unconditionally.

Session 1: Introduction to Thai Massage

Learn a basic 30 minute full-body Thai Massage sequence you can use at home to heal and relax your friends, family or give your yoga students the best Savasana ever!

Session 2: Advanced Techniques and Therapeutic Flying

Learn more refined techniques and explore therapeutic flying where the practitioner lifts the patient and works with gravity to open and relax the body.

To attend the advanced module, you will have ideally also attended the Session 1 introductory workshop on 25 May 2019. If you are unable to attend the introductory workshop, you will need permission from the instructor to attend this session. Please email to apply.

Session 1: Introduction to Thai Massage and Partner Yoga

25 May (Saturday): 10:30am – 12:00pm and 12.30pm - 4:30pm (30-minute break)

Enjoy a brief introduction to the origins and history of Thai Massage and learn the basics of its physical and energetic benefits. Prepare the body for practising Thai Massage with meditation and Yoga. With a short partner Yoga session, you will practise techniques of healing touch, assisted stretching and correct body positioning for safety and comfort. Designed to cultivate connection, build trust, and gain familiarity with both delivering and receiving touch, partner Yoga is a fun way to explore your balance, boundaries and bravery! The afternoon session will be spent learning how to give and receive a basic full-body relaxation Thai Massage with a partner. This will include leg, shoulders, neck, back and head massage.*

If you don’t have a partner, don’t worry! Please come along and you will be paired with another practitioner on the day! No prior experience of Yoga or massage is required to attend this workshop – just an open mind and a willingness to learn and connect!

*Thai massage is delivered fully-clothed. Flexible long pants and a long-sleeved t-shirt are the best clothes to ensure optimal comfort.

Session 2: Advanced Techniques and Therapeutic Flying

26 May (Sunday): 12:00pm – 4:30pm

Begin the day with a review of the foundational techniques learned in Session 1 followed by a partner Yoga session to warm and open the body and practise working with healing touch on your fellow classmates. Learn more about the ‘Sen lines’ that govern the energy system in Thai Massage theory. You will then spend the afternoon working with partners and in small groups to explore more advanced Thai Massage techniques, including safe ways to lift your patient in various planes (therapeutic flying). Therapeutic flying is a safe and effective way to open the body using body weight and gravity.**

If you don’t have a partner, you can still join! Please come along and you will be paired with another practitioner on the day.

*Thai massage is delivered fully-clothed. Flexible long pants and a long-sleeved t-shirt are the best clothes to ensure optimal comfort.

**This session will involve lifting and may not be suitable to all physical conditions (e.g. hip replacements, lower back disc ruptures). All medical conditions and injuries must be disclosed prior to attending this course.
