Backbend 1 & 2 with Shalon Wan

9-24 October (Weekends only), Langham Place – Mong Kok

To explore your potential and be aware of limitations in backbend, Shalon will share her personal understanding and practice experience. She will also break down some backbend poses and guide you through challenges and methods of progression that you will find useful during your backbend practice. 

 

Students will gain more confidence by using different ways to create greater mobility of shoulders, hips and spine and better strength of back and leg muscles. 

 

Key focus:

 

  1. Knowledge of spine mechanics in backbend

 

  1. Techniques to perform backbend safely 

 

  1. Different variations of backbends at beginning level (1.0) and intermediate to advanced level (2.0) 

BACKBEND 1.0

Session 1:

9 October (Saturday)

1.00pm – 4.00pm

The goal is to use different ways of creating space for upper back & middle back, front hip to increase mobility and strength that allow you to go into fundamental backbends (including wheel pose) safely. We will also learn preparations for overhead flipped grip position towards the end of the session. 

 

Session 2:

10 October (Sunday)

2.00pm - 4.00pm

Practice based on the learnings of Session 1.

 

BACKBEND 2.0

Learn deeper variations of backbends including king pigeon, full bow, king cobra and full bow.

 

Session 1:

16 October (Saturday)

1.00pm – 4.00pm

Explanation & breakdown of king pigeon and full bow pose assisted with props. Partner work may be included. 

 

Session 2:

17 October (Sunday)

2.00pm - 4.00pm

Complete backbend practice based on the learnings in Session 1. 

 

Session 3:

23 October (Saturday)

1.00pm – 4.00pm

Explanation and breakdown of variations, focusing on full camel and king cobra pose assisted with props. Partner work may be included. 

 

Session 4

24 October (Sunday)

2.00pm - 4.00pm

Complete backbend practice based on the learnings in Session 3.
